About Munich Airport (MUC)

Munich Airport (MUC) is situated northeast of Munich, in Germany, and is used as a base by Star Alliance and Lufthansa. It is considered the second base in the country for Lufthansa. Furthermore it is rated the second busiest German airport and the seventh in Europe with respect to passenger traffic. Skytrax assessed Munich Airport as the best airport in Europe in 2011, 2010 and from 2005 to 2008.

Although it bears the name of Franz Josef Strauss, a German governor of Bavaria and private pilot, the airport is widely known by the name of Munich Airport. It started functioning in 1992 and has developed ever since. A second large terminal was built in 2003 and plans for a third runway are made.

Munich Airport has two terminals. Terminal 1 is divided into five modules (A-E) designed to function quite independently from each other, mostly as separate terminals. Hall F situated between the two terminals is for Israel flights. The second terminal is newer and has approximately the same capacity as Terminal 1. Facilities are distributed around a Plaza. The area between the terminals is a recreational zone hosting shops, restaurants and business facilities. A mall, a railway station and an airport hotel are built here.
